The Mighty Mullion!

See this piece right here?

It’s a MULLION.

It also happens to be one of the key factors that affected the evolution of our lifestyle as a species…

(Seriously)

Read on for a brief look at how mullions have changed the way we live, work & play!

Is natural light important to you in your home?

I know for the vast majority of my buyers, it’s something they’re on the lookout for!

An Evolution Of Light

For many, it’s hard to imagine a time before electricity, but for previous generations, life was dictated by the sun.

Daylight allowed people to complete tasks while darkness led us to a life of dimly lit evenings where everything was done by the flickering of fire.

Even during the day, most dwellings were dark.

You’d leave your home to complete the vast majority of tasks simply because the sunshine allowed you to work more efficiently.

Windows weren’t a “thing” yet because there was no glass & any large holes in the wall would allow animals, or the elements, to enter.

The precursor of our traditional window was known as “ flat glass”. Created in the 1st century & found in Rome, Britain & Pompeii, the surface was rather small & quite opaque… it allowed a glow more than true light to enter a space.

In the early 17th century broadsheet glass was invented in Britain & shortly after, the technique was brought to the colonies via Jamestown, Virginia.

Still not able to be produced in large scale, mullions were invented as a way to connect the smaller panes together to form a much larger window with life-altering effects!

Allowing windows into homes created a safe haven from the outside without inhibiting our day-to-day productivity — Mullions are the tiny link to creating homes that light up our souls.

Are you a fan of big windows?

Did you learn something new today?

Tell me about it… I love hearing from you!
