Winter’s For The Birds

5 Tips to help survive winter

Why Winter?

Winter.

Love it or hate it, we live in a  4 season climate & a lot of us love to encourage the birds to hang out in our yards with bird feeders.

The thing is, we can unknowingly do more harm than good with these feeders so we reached out to aviary expert, Adam Timpf.

He’s a local Biologist & Ecological Consultant who’s been kind enough to answer all of my bird questions for years… thanks for identifying those bird calls Adam!

There is some science that backyard feeders are inadvertently exposing our feathery friends to disease, window strikes & cat attacks.

5 Ways You Can Help!

1- Adam’s first tip? Keep your furry felines indoors. Not only is it safer for ensuring your abiding by your city’s bylaws, domestic Cats are responsible for 38-133 million bird deaths annually in Canada. Yea, you heard me.

2- Change the seed frequently, especially after rainy or mild winter days. This is a sure way to help prevent the spread of diseases among birds.

3- Use high quality & high fat seed… Black sunflower seeds are a great all around feed, but the more variety you offer, the more diversity in birds who visit.

4- Offer water. This time of year, finding water can be a struggle for the birds! There are some cool high tech options, like a heated bird bath, but you can always just keep refilling a water source as it freezes over.

5- Plant native species in your garden… these are what our feathery friends need most. The land can provide all of the nourishment they need if we just let it.

Leave your ornamental grass standing through the winter & plants like sunflowers, cosmos, zinnias & asters should be left intact as they provide a great food source!

Trees like the Mountain Ash (not the Leonard Springer variety) & White Birch are wonderful winter sources of nutrients.

THE APP WE LOVE!

We promised to share our favourite Birding App — it’s FREE & it’s fun!

If you’re looking to have your own Adam Timpf in your pocket, check out Merlin Bird ID  (available on iOS & Android).

It’s super simple to use & you can download the species in any area you are visiting so you’re ready no matter where the birds take you!
