This is
one of the largest & most diverse collections of Lilacs in the world.
The truly stunning displays arrive, weather dependent, around
mid-May & grace us with their fragrant
blooms for a few weeks before the flowering stage of the
season ends in June.
As a local REALTOR, I love sharing what living here is like,
but
please respect any of the nature spaces you visit.
That means
no picking the lilacs,
keep your
dogs on a leash as well as picking up after them
& please
do not leave your litter behind.
This beautiful dell is known as the
Katie Osborn Lilac Collection & fills more than 3 acres
with these glorious displays each spring.
The name
“lilac” comes from the Persian word meaning bluish
-- quite
the practical description of these flowering shrubs.
Alright, Fun fact time:
The Wister Code (created by American horticulturist John Wister)
is used to classify the colour of a lilac blossom.
The 7 classifications are...
I. White
II. Violet
III. Blueish
IV. Lilac
V. Pinkish
VI. Magenta
VII. Purple
The Katie Osborne Lilac Trust was created in 1964 to expand & maintain the Royal Botanical Garden’s lilacs for years to come -- today the count sits at just over 740 lilac shrubs!
In
1959 there were 230 plants relocated to accommodate the expansion of the 403 Highway, creating the start of what we see today & is
now the stunning collection of over 600 varieties of Lilacs making this one of the most diverse dells in the world!
With kilometres of trails to explore, waterfront views & rolling landscapes,
there’s more than just blossoms to enjoy during the Spring months at the Arboretum.
Thank you for joining me on a tour of the Lilac Dell,
please
feel free to reach out if you’re thinking of a move
or would like some recommendations on where to explore.
Until Next Week,
Keep It Genuine.
