• Fall Bulbs for Spring Curb Appeal •
Fall has arrived – Can you feel it in the air?
This is the season of boots & scarves, of warm drinks & warm fires, of getting outside to explore — the season of gratitude.
This is also the season where green thumbs start to plan out their Spring & Summer gardens. Not only is it a great way to get outside before fall passes by but the joy you get when they finally arrive it is so worth the effort!
There is something so beautiful about those first few tulips pushing through the still soggy & often frosty soil… they are the true sign that Spring is on our doorsteps.
The beauty of bulbs is that they work well in the garden in a variety of settings but can also be planted in pots & strategically placed anywhere in your outdoor space (perfect for capitalizing on curb appeal for the Spring market).
So now that you are sold on bulbs as a great way to get more enjoyment out of your garden, we wanted to share our bulb basics to help get you started.
1- First you will want to consider your garden’s conditions… full sun, partial sun, does your soil tend to be soggy & wet or does it dry out quickly. Once you figure out the conditions, take a look at the chart below to see which bulbs would be a good match.
2- Once you have an idea of which bulbs would work in your garden you should cross reference them with the blooming chart below so you can enjoy blossoms throughout Spring and long into Summer.
3- Next you will need to measure the area in your garden where your bulbs will go then look at the chart below to see approximately how many bulbs you will need.
4- Now that you know which bulbs & how many you’ll need, head over to your local garden centre to buy your selection. If you are planning on planting a lot of them you may want to invest in a bulb shovel that helps speed up the planting process.
5-
When you are ready to dig in (see what I did there) head outside with your bulbs & lay them out on top of the soil where you plan on planting them. Visualize how they will look when they begin to bloom & decide where you want them to go. This speeds up the planting process & helps to ensure you will enjoy them come Spring.
6- Once you have buried them according to their proper depth you may want to consider a layer of mulch to help insulate against temperature fluctuation & to help keep the soil moist in the Spring. If you are in a squirrel friendly neighbourhood like us, you may also want to consider putting a layer of chicken wire on top to prevent those squirrels from snacking on your hard labour!
